Howard N. Uhrig (1924-2011)Howard N. Uhrig, 87, North Manchester, IN died at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 2, 2011 in Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne, IN.  He was born near Phillipsburg, Montgomery County, Ohio on May 25, 1924 to Alfred & Mary (Surber) Uhrig.

On June 26, 1949 he married Mary Kathryn Fish, she survives.  Also surviving is a daughter, Rebecca (Lowell) Shearer, Ft. Wayne, IN.  Two grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Nunnally and David (Trinity) Shearer, both of Ft. Wayne, IN.  Three great-grandchildren, Kathryn Parker, Belton, TX; David Nunnally and Nigella Shearer-Wilds, both of Ft. Wayne, IN.  A brother, Damon (Norma) Uhrig, Troy, OH.  A nephew, Steven (Debbie) Uhrig.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Howard Uhrig.  

A member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren, he served on District Boards with the Church of the Brethren.  Howard was also active in the North Manchester Historical Society.

He graduated from Phillipsburg (OH) High School in 1942 and received a BS degree in Physics from Manchester College.  He received his Masters Degree in Audio Visual Education from Indiana University and had completed extensive work toward a doctoral degree. 

An active Rotarian for over 50 years, he was a member of the North Manchester Rotary Club.  He was also a member of the St. Joseph County Mental Health Association, South Bend, IN and the State Audio-Visual Association.  He was a member and past president of Phi Delta Kappa.  He taught physics and math at Noble High School in Wabash for two years, and at Whites Institute for one year before joining the faculty at Manchester College in 1955 where he taught Audio-Visual Education and Engineering Drawing.  In 1957 he became an administrator of the South Bend Community Schools and later became Director of the Audio-Visual Department, retiring in 1986. 

He received special recognition from the Rotary Club, Phi Delta Kappa and the St. Joseph County Mental Health Association by the naming of Uhrig Apartments.   

Services will be held Friday, August 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, IN.  The family will receive friends following the service at Timbercrest Chapel.  Pastor David Bibbee and Pastor Kurt Borgmann will officiate.  Burial will be in Manchester Church of the Brethren Memorial Garden.  Final care is entrusted to McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, IN.  For those who wish to honor the memory of Howard N.
