SOUTH PLEASANT SCHOOL (DISTRICT 3)

This school was located in the northwestern part of the township as well as of the county. It was located one mile south of the Kosciusko County line and three miles east of the Fulton county line.

The first school building was a log one, which was built on one-fourth of an acre of land purchased in 1840 from a man by the name of Shellenbarger. Each seat in the building would accommodate four scholars. The books were all elementary that were used.

The log school building stood until about 1857, when it was replaced with a frame building that measured only 16 x 18 feet. In the frame building the seats were not arranged as they were in the log. But were placed around the walls. At this time the school was very large, as there were sixty to seventy pupils, with twenty to thirty being in one spelling class.

In 1878, another quarter of an acre of ground was purchased from Will Platter, this made the amount of ground for the school one-half acre.

In the following year, 1879, the brick school was built. This building was larger than the frame 24 x 36 feet, and had sufficient seating room for fifty-three scholars.

With the church across the road, the schoolhouse was used for other things over the years.

The last year of school is believed to have been in 1919 and for a time the church used the building. Then it was used for storage and finally sold. But to whom and when is not known.

It is felt that there was a school one mile south of this one. But it was not there long, for it was felt there were too many schools in the district. The building was rather rudely constructed and the desks, seats, or benches were removable. The building later became part of a residence.

In 1934, the South Pleasant Church and School had a homecoming with each other in 1935. There was a program in the afternoon and evening. The homecoming was held in the schoolhouse. The Cemetery Association had put a well down so to be convenient for water. ...
